Description
Wild Dog from the Vundu pack, Mana Pools NP, Zimbabwe 2014
After a good hour long search on foot after 1st light we gave up on finding these dogs. We were heading towards a gentle bull elephant when all hell broke loose from the bush with impalas running everywhere. The impalas were followed by six full dogs, they had already hunted and fed.
We followed the dogs on foot (had to jog a bit) until they came to rest not too far away under a tree. We spent the morning watching them, but they didn't move. So we took a drive and came back. Then we headed off for some lunch came back and they dogs were still there but had moved to the other side of the tree. Had another drive in the afternoon and came back maybe an hour or so before sun down.
We walked and crawled over to the shelter of a large termite mound and tree and waited for the dogs to stir. In the hope that they would come our way when they did finally move. Nothing goes to plan with wildlife and they headed straight to the road so we had to rapidly back track to the vehicle. This was taken with me kneeling behind the vehicle as the dog came past on the road.
